Cancer Data

Arkansas Cancer Facts & Figures

The 2017 Arkansas Cancer Facts and Figures contains the most recent data available on cancer incidence and mortality in Arkansas. It describes the invasive cancers in Arkansas in terms of new cancer cases and deaths due to cancer for the period 1999 – 2013.  It identifies disparities in cancer incidence and mortality by race, gender, age, stage at diagnosis and geographic area. It also includes county-specific rates for the most commonly diagnosed cancers and those for which public health interventions exist to reduce the cancer burden in Arkansas.

This publication is intended to assist healthcare organizations, health professionals, community groups, research scientists and others who are working to reduce the burden of cancer in Arkansas. It will also be used for policy-makers, advocates, and news organizations as they seek detailed, easy-to-read information about the impact of cancer on Arkansas. The Arkansas Central Cancer Registry (ACCR) is a population-based registry designed to collect, analyze, research and disseminate quality cancer data to help describe the burden of cancer so that evidence-based cancer prevention and control programs can be implemented.

Arkansas Cancer Registry

Population-based cancer surveillance is critical in North America for cancer control activities aimed at reducing the morbidity and mortality of cancer, the second leading cause of death in the United States. The Arkansas Central Cancer Registry (ACCR) is a population-based registry designed to collect timely and complete data on all cancer cases diagnosed in the state.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death behind heart disease in Arkansas. The most frequently diagnosed cancers in the state include lung, colorectal, breast cancer among women, and prostate cancer among men. Due to the increasing burden, it will be important for the Arkansas Central Cancer Registry to collect cancer information for surveillance, to conduct cancer investigations, to assist initiatives for early detection and prevention, and to supply data for research and policy endeavors.

American Cancer Society – Facts & Figures

The American Cancer Society has published Cancer Facts & Figures annually since 1952. These annual reports provide the most current information about cancer, including the projected numbers of new cancer cases and deaths for the publication year. A unique feature of these publications is their projections of the number of cancer cases and deaths expected in each state and in the nation in the current year. These widely cited projections are scientifically accurate enough to serve as a basis for research, yet readily understood by the public. Each edition of Cancer Facts & Figures includes a Special Section of in-depth focus on a specific cancer or group of cancers.
